Wandering hearts with nowhere to rest

gather in Jongno’s cheap back-alley diners,

drunk on worn-out cultural Marxism,

laughing as they consume their poverty—

when suddenly, a voice, soft as memory, rings out:

“Chapssalddeok, Manggaeddeok!”

That sound once echoed through village alleys,

a legend now, half-forgotten by time.

But here he comes, the man with the wooden box,

eyes crescented like a waxing moon,

years sitting quietly at their corners.

He has aged.

I have aged.

Even the alley has aged.

Yet inside that smoothed and weathered box,

rice cakes lie neatly, as if time still bows before them.

Once we strutted through Jongno in shining suits,

now returned—unshackled, free,

cradling our aging with noisy jokes.

And he—owner of a building somewhere on the edge—

opens the sacred box of sticky cakes,

setting them free into the bellies

of hungry, rootless nomads.

“Praise be to the business of memories—

that man’s sacred trade.”
